Charities and organisations that can help

This week I thought it might be useful to link some places parents/carers can go for help and advice on anything SEND related. Next week I will look at charities on grants, trusts etc.

SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disability Information and Advice Service):

All local authorities must provide this support. They are there to support and signpost parents/carers on the educational aspects of SEND. Although employed by the Local Authority, they work at arm鈥檚 length from them and are required to provide information from the Code of Practice. The level of support does vary; it will depend on capacity, size of your locality etc. If you go on to your Local Authority, enter Local Offer and SENDIASS you should find their contact details.

IPSEA (Independent Provider of Special Needs Advice):

They have information on SEND, from legal matters to EHCP鈥檚. On their website you will find template letters; they also offer training for parents/carers and professionals.

鈥淎ll children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have a legal right to an education that meets their individual needs. But many tens of thousands of children and young people with SEND are not getting the support they are legally entitled to.

At IPSEA, we are here to change that.

We are the leading charity in the field of SEND law in England, and we provide free and independent legal advice and support to families of children and young people with SEND. We also provide training on the SEND legal framework, and we influence policy at both a local and national level鈥�

Contact-for families of disabled children:

A national charity which provides information and advice for families of children and young people with special needs from 0-25 years. Their website has a wealth of information online, printed and links to their helpline. You will find guidance on education, benefits and finances, childcare, social care, medical information and much more. They also offer webinars.

SOS!SEN:

SOS!SEN is a national charity that aims to empower parents and carers of children and young people with SEND to successfully tackle the difficulties they face when trying to secure the right educational provision for their children.

SENTAS (Special Educational Needs Transport Advocacy Service)

A non-profit service that provides free advocacy and advice for parents and young people regarding home to school transport for students with special educational needs.

It helps families challenge local authorities on transport decisions, such as statutory walking distances and journey times, and also maintains directories of accessible services and activities.

Tuesday club is a social group for children and young adults. Some of our current and past students attend. Want to know more?

The two-hour sessions include a range of accessible sports and games, as well as a quiet area for more relaxed activities. A healthy tea is also provided at the sessions鈥�.

We had a meeting on Wednesday and have suggested a meeting with SLT to share ideas and work together for the benefit of students. In the meantime we have plans leading up to Christmas where we will support the MOVE event.
